Choosing the right books for growth
Leaders are readers. Through the 20 years as an Assistant and Youth Pastor, I’ve found these resources extremely valuable. They have not only been a resource in my own life, but I have used them as tools to disciple others as well. These books will lead to a deeper understanding of the only book that has all the answers; The Bible. Choosing the right books for personal growth and discipleship starts with finding resources that are saturated with the Word of God. He is our finest resource. Some of my top books, I will admit, are more recent. But they have proven to be a powerful resource. Books I’m presently using for discipleship.

Choosing the right Bible
Choosing the right Bible doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, because it is God’s Word, it will not return void! That being said, there are so many options. Here are my top two for now. I do suggest a ‘study bible’ as it will give you a deeper look at the text. I do suggest having a physical bible. Technology is fantastic. You can even highlight and make notes on your digital bible apps. However, for the sake of focus and more serious study, a physical bible really helps.

Click the image to the left to check out the Blue Letter Bible. If you’re going to have a digital Bible, I see this as a valuable tool. Mainly because it offers a split view between multiple bible versions. I personally use two at once, along with my physical Bible.
Is there a wrong Bible to use?
Bottom line, no. Isaiah 55:10-11 “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there without watering the earth and making it bear and sprout, and furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; so will My Word be which goes forth from My mouth; it will not return to Me empty”
I’ll be honest with you. I spent about a week and a half bitter at my Bible. Not towards God and not His Word, but my NIV 1984 version Bible. I’ve spent 25 years with my bible and have learned something valuable. NIV 1984 has conditioned us to understand we have a sinful nature. This is true for the unbeliever. But as Children of God, it is NOT true at all. The original Greek word sarx, means flesh. Flesh means “human effort” not sinful nature. We are righteous in God’s sight. But in our earthly body we certainly can live according to the flesh. But the question is, why? Why are we striving when God has already given us the victory? Read Romans 5-8 for further understanding.
By the way, I’ve made up with my bible. I still use it daily along with my Blue Letter Bible. Expect anything of man to fail in one way or another. Trust God.
