Galatians 3:15-18

I love how the NIV opens this section: “…let me take an example from everyday life…”

That’s what most of us are really looking for—how does this apply to my day-to-day life? Is God’s love really for me?

Paul is speaking to a church that started well. They began with faith. But they were being pulled into something else: Grace+, Jesus+, Promise+. As if the gospel were a subscription plan—pay your dues, keep the rules, then receive. Disney+, Paramount+, and every other “+” works that way. The gospel does not. God’s love is different.

The original good news gives life. All the pluses pull you in and slowly suck the life out of you. When you add law as the finishing step, you accidentally say, “Jesus was helpful… but not enough.”

Paul’s everyday example is simple and powerful. Even a human contract, once ratified, cannot be annulled or added to. No one gets to rewrite the terms later. How much more, then, a covenant God Himself made?

The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his offspring—singular. That offspring is Christ. The law came 430 years later. It did not cancel the earlier promise. It did not reorganize it. It did not make the inheritance depend on performance instead of promise.

If the inheritance came by law, it would no longer come by promise. But God gave it to Abraham by promise. And that same inheritance—righteousness, blessing, the Spirit, closeness with God—has been given to everyone who believes.

Law-based living and law-based teaching cannot deliver what they promise, because none of us can earn it in our own strength. The gospel is not opposed to effort; it is opposed to earning. Salvation, holiness, and nearness to God are not wages we work for. They are inheritance we receive.

Supporting truths from the chapter make this clear:

• Those of faith are the sons of Abraham (Galatians 3:7).
• The blessing of Abraham comes to the Gentiles through Christ so that by faith we receive the promised Spirit (Galatians 3:14).
• If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise (Galatians 3:29).

The law is holy, righteous, and good (Romans 7:12). It does what it was designed to do: show us “I can’t” so we will look to Jesus. It diagnoses; it cannot cure. It was never God’s engine for making people righteous. Long before Sinai, God’s pattern was already promise-and-faith. Abraham believed, and it was credited to him as righteousness.

The Promise is not void. The Promise stands because the God who made it is faithful.

That is the foundation. Next we look at what it means to actually stand in it.
