Crucified with Christ – Discovering Your New Identity (Galatians 2:20)

“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” — Galatians 2:20 (ESV)

This single verse is one of the most powerful identity statements in the entire Bible. It is not a motivational slogan or a call to daily self-crucifixion. It is a declaration of what God has already accomplished for every believer through union with Jesus.

What Does It Mean to Be Crucified with Christ?

To be “crucified with Christ” is a past-tense reality. Your old identity and standing before God ended at the cross. Jesus died in your place for your sins, and in God’s mysterious work of union, believers were included in that death. The old you—defined by sin, guilt, and separation from God—died with Him.

This is not something you achieve through effort. It is an accomplished fact.

• Romans 6:6–7: “We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.”
• Colossians 2:12: “Having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.”

What Does It Mean That “I No Longer Live”?

Paul isn’t saying you cease to exist or lose your personality. He means the old “I”—the self that stood at the center of life, trying to earn acceptance through performance, religious striving, or moral effort—has been dethroned. That version of you is no longer the boss or the primary point of reference.

You no longer live as if your worth depends on how well you perform for God. Instead, you fix your eyes on Jesus and His finished work.

• Romans 6:11: “Consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.”

What Does It Mean That “Christ Lives in Me”?

This is the glory of the gospel. Christianity is not only “Christ died for you.” It is also “Christ lives in you” by His Spirit. Your new life is not you trying harder to imitate Jesus. It is His life flowing through you.

As one teacher put it, it’s learning to be “the [your name] expression of Jesus Christ.” Physically and audibly say this aloud, inserting your name. When I can say that, “I can be the Zach Rasmusson expression of Jesus Christ to the world,” it changes my perspective and motivation. I’m not striving to be, I’m trusting in the finished work of Christ, the new creation that I am, and Christ in me.

• Colossians 1:27: “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
• Galatians 2:20 itself: The life you now live is lived “by faith” in the Son of God.

Summary of the First Half of the Verse:

• Crucified with Christ = Your old identity and standing ended in Jesus.
• No longer I who live = The performance-based self is no longer the boss.
• Christ lives in me = The new life is Christ’s life, given to you and lived through you.

This identity is secure because it rests entirely on what Jesus has done, not on your daily consistency.
